Modular Biological Capacitor

Modularcapacitor.JPG

This is a modular biological capacitor, where the input and output can be defined by the user. The output of this device is proportional to the temporal derivative of the concentration of the input. Please refer to BBa_J102005 for an example capacitor, where the the input is anhydrotetracycline, and the output is GFP. Extensive modelling data is also included. The user must add a promoter, RBS, and coding sequence in front of this device, where the coding sequence is the output protein, and the promoter is sensitive in some way to the input molecule.

The concentration of AHL, a small molecule which activates luxR, is used as a chemical dial to control the transcription rate from J102001. For the capacitor to display the desired behaviour, the promoters must be of approximately equal strength. The more AHL in the medium, the more transcription occurs from J102001.
