Feruloyl-CoA Synthetase (FCS) from Streptomyces, FCS-Str, catalyses the fourth step in our vanillin biosynthesis pathway. It converts ferulic acid into feruoyl-CoA, avtivating it through CoA-thioesterification.

We tested two alternate FCS enzymes for this pathway step; this enzyme from Streptomyces, and also a homolog from Pseudomonas putida, FCS-Ppu (BBa_K5443011).

This part builds on the work of earlier iGEM teams, who contributed FCS Parts as follows: BBa_K4256006.

Figure 1. FCS-Str-catalysed conversion of ferulic acid to feruoyl-CoA.
This reaction represents the fourth step in our vanillin synthesis pathway. The enzyme FCS-Str converts ferulic acid into feruoyl-CoA.
