DsbA signal sequence (enables periplasm export)

The signal sequence of the DsbA protein linked to the coding sequence of another protein enables export of the latter into the periplasm.

Usage and Biology

The DsbA gene encodes a periplasmic disulfide bond isomerase which posses a signal sequence. The protein is localized in the periplasm and catalyzes the formation of disulfide bonds. It therefore enables the correct folding of proteins in this compartment.
The signal sequence of the DsbA protein linked to the coding sequence of another protein enables export of the latter into the periplasm. The accumulation of the expressed protein in the periplasm can be used for the purification of the protein and to prevent interaction with cytoplasmic components. Freiburg 09 DsbA grafik.jpg
