The cytomegalovirus (CMV) promoter is a complex transcription factor regulatory element (TFRE) for various commonly expressed TF (1). The promoter activity is regulated by a system-specific combination of interactions with its respective TF, examples of its activity being activated by members of the MAP/ERK kinase kinase 1 (Mekk1) -JNK-AP-1 pathway have been proven, and being repressed by p53 when it attaches and interacts with the TATA binding protein and/or basal transcriptional machinery of the CMV promoter (2). Therefore, its activity is deemed as cell-type dependent. Functions of the CMV promoter include but are not limited to involvement in DNA manipulation of embryonic stem cells (3).
