ALOX12B

Usage and Biology

ALOX12B encodes for the protein Arachidonate 12-lipoxygenase, 12R-type. The primary function of Arachidonate 12-lipoxygenase, 12R-type, in the skin is the catalysis of the oxidation of linoleoyl moiety on O-linoleoyl-ω-hydroxy ceramide to form 9R-hydroperoxy- linoleoyl-ω-hydroxyceramide, a critical process in the formation of the corneocyte lipid envelope in mammalian skin [1].

The gene codes for one of the enzymes used for iGEM24_Linkoping substitution therapy for Ichthyosis.
