hok/mok
This gene comes from the hok/sok system in Escherichia coli. The hok is able to encode a kind of toxic protein that can result to the collapse of cell membrane potential, cellular respiratory arrest, cell shape changes, and ultimately cell death. The gene mok is overlapped with hok, and it encodes the lead peptide of the toxic protein. Both of them have a relatively longer half-life. The hok mRNA can be specifically binded with sok aitisense RNA, which inhibits the expression of the toxic protein.
