This gene encodes for the farnesene synthase derived from Picea abies and has been codon optimized in cyanobacteria. This sesquiterpene synthase converts farnesyl pyrophosphate to α-farnesene.

Farnesene

Farnesene is an organic chemical with formula of C15H24, and is a colorless, water soluble compound with market value of about 100 RMB per Kilogram. In nature, Farnesene is found in green apple skins, and is used as alarm pheromones by termines. In aromatherapy, it has anti-inflammatory anti-fungal and antimicrobial qualities, and is attributed to being able to calm and sedate one’s mind. They can also help to manage chronic diseases like Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimer’s, and irritable bowel syndrome.
