The gene encoding the histidine kinase receptor
When the extracellular concentration of CSP increases to a certain threshold, CSP binds to the extracellular domain of the histidine kinase receptor encoded by comD on the cell membrane, and the histidine kinase receptor is phosphorylated at aspartate to activate the intracellular response regulator protein ComE. The phosphorylated ComE protein binds to specific downstream gene promoters and regulates the expression of downstream target genes regulated by bacterial density sensing.
