hchA promoter

hchA is the structural gene encoding Hsp31 (protein/nucleic acid deglycase). It is a stationary phase-inducible gene. In exponentially growing cells, the nucleoid-binding protein H-NS downregulates Hsp31 synthesis, while entry into the stationary phase leads to enhanced hchA transcription from its σS dependent promoter. hchA performs a protective function under a wide range of stress conditions, and hchA null mutants exhibit a decreased ability to survive in deep stationary phase relative to hchA+ cells. Therefore, we believe it can be a strong indicator of the stationary phase.

This is the hchA mRNA expression-Time graph.
