Choline Oxidase (CodA)

Choline oxidase, from Arthobacter globiformis, catalyzes the flavin-mediated oxidation of choline to glycine betaine, via a betaine aldehyde intermediate, and producing hydrogen peroxide as a side-product [1,2]. It is a member of the glucose-choline-methanol oxidoreductase enzyme superfamily, which includes glucose oxidase, methanol oxidase, and choline dehydrogenase [1,2]. Members of this superfamily have significant similarity in both the structure of their catalytic site and their mechanisms of oxidation.[3] In cells, the glycine betaine produced by choline oxidase is an essential osmoregulator and acts as a methyl donor in the biosynthesis of methionine [4].
