Notch core
This protein domain is derived from the transmembrane part of the Notch protein. When the extracellular domain of Notch binds to its ligand Delta, the Notch core domain will undergo intramembrane proteolysis, releasing the intracellular domain. The released intracellular domain acts as a transcriptional regulator, affecting the cellular activity. The extracellular and intracellular domain can be artificially swapped, offering a tool for designing novel signaling pathways [1].
