spp - Sucrose-Phosphate Phosphatase gene from Synechocystis PCC 6803

Usage and Biology

spp codes for Sucrose-phosphate phosphatase (SPP), an enzyme involved in the sucrose biosynthesis pathway in the cyanobacteria Synechocystis PCC 6803[1].

Fructose-6-phosphate is converted into sucrose-6-phosphate by the action of sucrose-phosphate synthase (SPS). Sucrose-phosphate phosphatase (SPP) then catalyses the conversion of sucrose-6-phosphate into sucrose [2].

In Synechocystis PCC 6803, SPS and SPP are coded for by two separate genes, sps, and spp [1].

In S. elongatus, SPS and SPP are natively found as a fused protein, and this fusion protein is coded for by a single sps gene[3].
