cat cassette (chloramphenicol resistance)

cat gene and promoter from pC194 plasmid, Genbank V01277.

Usage and Biology

MIC for E. coli DH10B cells is 4 ug/ml chloramphenicol. This is near background; the cassette appears not to function in E. coli. Horinouchi (1982) says this cassette is inducible. Growth at 0.5 ug/ml for 30 minutes, followed by resistance at 20 ug/ml in E. coli. See part J70304 for a version with the 5' UTR eliminated in an effort to eliminate this behavior.
