Neurogenin 3 (NEUROG3) is a basic helix–loop–helix transcription factor and plays an important role in beta-cell development. It usually forms a homodimer with another basic helix–loop–helix transcription factor and regulate gene expression. NEUROG3 is involved in neurogenesis and the development of embryonic pancreas. The mice lacking NEUROG3 died due to diabetes as they did not have the alpha, beta, delta, and pancreatic polypeptide islet cells along with endocrine precursor cells.[1] Transient expression of PDX1, NEUROG3, and/or MAFA has been successfully used to reprogram intestinal crypt cells into glucose-responsive insulin-producing neoislet cells.[2]
