Spo0E dephosphatase transcription factor Spo0A∼P

The Spo0A∼P transcription factor is specifically dephosphorylated by the Spo0E phosphatase. The Spo0E gene is differentially regulated and generally induced by growth conditions antithetical to sporulation (Bongiorni et al., 2007). The spo0E locus of Bacillus subtilis codes for a negative regulator of sporulation that, when overproduced, represses sporulation (Ohlsen et al., 1994). spo0E encodes a phosphatase that is an inhibitor of the initiation of sporulation. In vitro, the target of the Spo0E phosphatase is Spo0A;P, suggesting that in vivo Spo0A;P might also be the primary target (LeDeaux & Grossman, 1995).
