Part:BBa_K1475002
FAT-2 delta 12 desaturase from C. elegans
This part encodes the FAT-2 delta 12 desaturase from Caenorhabditis elegans and uses oleic acid (C18:1Δ9) as a substrate to produce linoleic acid (C18:2∆9,12).
Usage and Biology
Fatty acyl desaturases act on acyl groups to introduce double bonds. Fat-2 is a ∆12 fatty acyl desaturase which is able to introduce a double bond in C16 and C18 fatty acids in Caenorhabditis elegans, and it has been shown to work as a ∆15 desaturase in yeast using oleic acid (C18:1∆9) as a substrate [1]. In nature the desaturation of fatty acids is important for keeping the cell membrane fluid in cold conditions [2].
This part contains only the coding region of the fat-2 ∆12-desaturase from “Caenorhabditis elegans”, the natural gene consists of three exons. [2]
