UGT1A1 - UDP-glucuronosyltransferase 1A1
UGT1A1 (UDP-glucuronosyltransferase 1A1) plays a crucial role in the detoxification of environmental pollutants such as dioxins, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) through glucuronidation, a process where glucuronic acid is added to lipophilic molecules, increasing their solubility. This reaction converts these toxic compounds into more hydrophilic metabolites, making them easier to excrete via bile or urine. By metabolizing dioxins, PAHs, and PCBs, UGT1A1 helps reduce their toxicity and potential to cause cellular damage, particularly within the liver.
