Salmonella Enterica LT2 strain fadA (3-ketoacyl-CoA thiolase)

This sequence encodes a specific enzyme from the Salmonella Beta-Oxidation cycle. fadA is one of many enzymes under the fad family, which largely represents enzymes associated with fatty acid metabolism. In the Beta Oxidation cycles of Salmonella and E.coli, fadA acts as the small subunit in the tetramer fadBA, or multifunctional fatty acid oxidation protein. The tetramer consists of two large subunits (fadB) and two small subunits (fadA). The fadBA complex is a part of the aerobic respiration cycle in Salmonella. It is shown in literature to be less sterically specific compared to E.coli (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1347308/)

This part should always be used in conjunction with the fadB gene of Salmonella Enterica as well as the fadE gene of Salmonella Enterica. These three genes represent the complete beta-oxidation cycle of Salmonella Enterica. It should be used with the specificity of beta-oxidation in mind, and it only acts upon acylated fatty acids. It functions by removing two carbons at a time, and then the end product is transferred to a third enzyme, fadE. fadE recouples the biproducts of the breakdown of fatty acids, and either continues to break down the fatty acid into acetyl-coA, or feeds the long-chain fatty acid into the membrane repair cycle.
