Pdx1: A transcription factor required for embryonic development of pancreas
Pancreas/ duodenum homeobox protein 1 (PDX1) or insulin promoter factor 1 is a homeodomain transcription factor. It is involved in transcriptional activation of insulin, somatostatin, islet amyloid polypeptide, glucokinase, and type-2 glucose transporter genes. It is required for early embryonic development of the pancreas and proximal duodenum. It plays an important role in the specification of different endocrine lineages, and maintenance of beta-cell function.[1] Transient expression of PDX1, NEUROG3, and/or MAFA has been successfully used to reprogram intestinal crypt cells into glucose-responsive insulin-producing neoislet cells.[2]
