Source

This region is part of the larger IcsA protein which is a unipolarly expressed outer membrane protein endogenous to Shigella flexneri. In S. flexneri, IcsA catalyzes the unipolar polymerization of filamentous actin which generates a propulsive force allowing the bacteria to swim inside mammalian host cells. Although this is an outer membrane protein, its polar localization occurs before export to the outer membrane and is subsequently maintained by a complete lipopolysaccharide layer which slows the diffusion of the protein around the outer membrane.
