When E.coli cells are irradiated with UV light (240 nm), bacteria start synthesizing the fluorescent protein. Why?

Eubacteria respond to DNA damage with a set of mechanisms called SOS response. The induction of this system involves more than forty independent SOS genes, most of which encode proteins engaged in protection, repairing, replication, mutagenesis and metabolism of DNA.

How does this system work? Under normal conditions, LexA protein represses the transcription of many DNA repairing proteins by binding to some sequences called SOS “boxes” in their operators. But, when a damage in the DNA occurs, (different types of genotoxic stress can make this system start), the accumulation RecA-ssDNA-ATP complexes activate LexA for autocleavage.
