FUSLCD

It is the low complexity region of FUS, a RNA binding protein that perform various functions during transcription initiation, RNA splicing and transportation. When this protein accumulate in cytoplasm, it could phase separate and influence RNA metabolism.[1]


Usage and Biology

Several natural protein or protein domains could be used as biobricks to create artificial phases in cells, including FUS.[2] Linked with oligomerizable proteins, it could form phases with different shape and size. Therefore, by combining with many other biobricks, FUS could perform different functions. According to our modlling result, if proper substrates are chosen, more smaller phases would have better performance in accelerating biochemical reactions happening in it, comparing to less larger phases. (Figure 1) However, if you want to focus on studying asymmetric cell division, phases that only aggregate at one end of the cell may be the best choice. By introducing other biobricks like lacI or dcas9, you can amplify nucleic acid at one end of the cell and then induce cell differentiation in this system.
