The device was tested for its ability to confer sensitivity to the antibiotic bacitracin. Normally E. coli are resistant to this as it cannot pass through the outer membrane. With this device, the bacteria are killed by the antibiotic, evidenced by a ring of clearing seen when a bacitracin soaked disc is placed onto a lawn of growing bacteria. This suggests that the device confers non-selective permeability on molecules at least 1400Da in size.
