ketoisocaproate decarboxylase (THI3); converts alpha-ketoisocaproate to 3-methylbutanal

BBa_J45009 encodes a branched-chain amino acid transaminase derived from the THI3 gene from Saccharomyces cerevisiae. THI3 catalyzes the second step in isoamyl alcohol biosynthesis: conversion of α-ketoisocaproate to 3-methylbutanal via enzymatic reaction 4.1.1.1.

Usage and Biology

  • THI3 is formerly known as KID1.
  • 3-methylbutanal is reduced via a chassis alcohol dehydrogenase to isoamyl alcohol which is a precursor to isoamyl acetate (banana odor).
  • Note: BBa_J45009 has several internal BioBrick restriction sites. We indicate proposed silent mutations for eliminating the BioBrick restriction sites. It can only be used as a suffix part in BioBrick assembly.
