Salicylate is made from chorismate via isochorismate. The reactions are catalysed by PchA (isochorismate synthase) and PchB (isochorismate-pyruvate lyase).  Combined expression of the two proteins from one BioBrick part successfully generates salicylate in ''E. coli.''
