The original source of this part, the lab of Dr Jules Beekwilder in Wageningen, the Netherlands, was not able to show this part to reduce benzalacetone, either in vitro or in vivo.

This part was also shown via LCMS by the Cambridge-JIC team in 2014 NOT to reduce benzalacetone.

When the peak marked with a green asterisk was run through a mass spectrometer, benzalacetone was detected in both strains, but raspberry ketone in neither. While this enzyme has never been shown to reduce benzalacetone, it has been shown that some strains of E. coli will endogenously reduce benzalacetone in the absence of any modification (Biotechnol. J. 2007, 2, 1270–1279).

It must be made clear that when this gene was first cloned, its categorisation as a benzalacetone reductase was "tentative".

Be wary of using this part.
