Antifungal protein from Aspergillus giganteus

This part codes for AFP, an antifungal protein produced naturally by Aspergillus giganteus, a mold species in the fungi kingdom. AFP is potent against many human- and plant-pathogenic fungi, yet it has little effect on the viability of bacteria, yeast, plant and mammalian cells. Its appears to inhibit the synthesis of chitin, a protein that fungi rely on to build their cell walls. However, its exact mode of action - whether its antifungal properties are due to its affinity for chitin, its interference with certain classes of chitin syntheases, or other reasons - is still debated in the scientific literature. We plan to produce this protein in E. coli for potential use in combating plant-pathogenic fungi.
