Usage and Biology

Homotretameric protein from Discosoma sp. Thought to play a role in photoprotection of the coral's resident symbiont microalgae's photosystems from photoinhibition caused by high light levels found near the surface of coral reefs. In deeper water, the fluorescence may be to convert blue light into longer wavelengths more suitable for use in photosynthesis by the microalgal symbionts. It belongs to the GFP family. It possesses bright fluorescence with excitation/emission maxima at 558 and 583 nm, respectively. It has an extinction coefficient of 72,500 M-1 cm-1, which means how strongly a chemical species absorbs light at a given wavelength. It has high absortion and high quantum yield (68%). The fluorescence quantum yield gives the efficiency of the fluorescence process. It is defined as the ratio of the number of photons emitted to the number of photons absorbed. Modified with a LVA tag for rapid degradation of the protein and faster fall time for the emission.
