Ampicillin Resistance gene

Ampicillin resistance gene is widely used in genetic engineering experiments. It encodes the enzyme β-lactamase, inactivating the common antibiotic Ampicillin. With the right promoter, it can be expressed in any type of cell, including bacteria. An example of its recommended use is;

The use of this gene in a plasmid meant to transfect bacteria, provides the opportunity to select the bacteria that have successfully received and express the plasmid using the Ampicillin antibiotic. The transfected bacteria are resistant and survive, while the other bacteria are eliminated by the antibiotic.
