MVAPP decarboxylase converts mevalonate-5-diphosphate (MVAPP) into isopentenyl diphosphate (IPP)
Mevalonate-5-diphosphate decarboxylase (MDD) is an enzyme that plays a key role in the mevalonate pathway, which is crucial for the biosynthesis of isoprenoids. MDD catalyzes the decarboxylation of mevalonate-5-diphosphate (MVAPP) to form isopentenyl diphosphate (IPP), a building block for various essential biomolecules like cholesterol, steroids, and terpenes. This reaction also releases carbon dioxide (CO₂) and is a critical step in the production of precursors for cellular processes such as membrane synthesis and protein prenylation.
