3-hydroxy-3-methyl-glutaryl-coenzyme A (Hmg-CoA) reductase converts Hmg-CoA into mevalonate

HMG-CoA reductase (HMGCR) is the rate-controlling enzyme of the mevalonate pathway, which is responsible for producing cholesterol and other isoprenoids. It catalyzes the conversion of HMG-CoA to mevalonic acid, a key step in cholesterol biosynthesis. In mammalian cells, HMGCR is normally regulated by competitive suppression.
