H2B
Histone H2B is a core component of the nucleosome, the fundamental unit of chromatin structure in eukaryotic cells. It plays a crucial role in DNA packaging by forming part of the histone octamer, around which DNA is wrapped. This packaging is essential for DNA organization within the nucleus, regulating gene expression, and maintaining chromosomal stability.
In research, H2B is commonly fused to fluorescent proteins to guide these proteins to the nucleus. This fusion takes advantage of H2B’s natural localization to chromatin, ensuring that the attached fluorescent proteins accumulate specifically in the nucleus. This approach is particularly useful for visualizing nuclear structures, tracking gene expression, or studying nuclear dynamics in live cells.
