The ada gene from Dickeya zeae encodes adenosine deaminase (ADA), which is a key enzyme involved in purine metabolism. It has 2'-deoxyadenosine deaminase activity, adenosine deaminase activity, and zinc ion binding activity. The ADA enzyme is responsible for irreversibly deaminating adenosine and 2'-deoxyadenosine (dAdo) to produce inosine and 2'-deoxyinosine (dIno), respectively. These metabolic intermediates can then be further metabolized.
