Bacteriocin operon (epidermin, lysostaphin, nisin, and pep5)
The 2024 NYC-Empire-State developed a bacteriocin operon that consists of four antimicrobial peptides (epidermin, lysostaphin, nisin, and pep5), linked together by the AgrC-AgrA linker and regulated by the P2 promoter. In the context of staph. aureus’s quorum sensing, this part can be integrated into a non-pathogenic bacteria that naturally expresses or is engineered to express the agr quorum sensing system. Upon detecting AIP, the P2 promoter induces the expression of the four bacteriocins, which can target the staph. aureus strain. This creates a bacteria-based “detect-and-kill” mechanism for detecting and eliminating the staph. aureus.
