Design Notes
We hope to impart antimicrobial properties to wound dressings without the use of antibiotics, so we have chosen defensins. This is because they are of human origin, so there is less likelihood of immune reactions compared to antimicrobial peptides from other species. Defensins also have benefits such as wound healing and inflammation resistance. Additionally, different defensins have varying levels of resistance against different pathogens, so we aim to utilize synthetic biology to produce a variety of materials combined with different defensins in order to offer users more choices.
