ERG20 is an endogenous gene in mevalonate (MVA) pathway that codes for yeast farnesyl diphosphate synthase(FPPS). FPPS is responsible of jointing IPP and DMAPP by condensation reaction, thus, synthesizing geranyl pyrophosphate(GPP) and further transforming it to farnesyl diphosphate(FPP). FPP serves as a precursor for the biosynthesis of various isoprenoid compounds include steroids, coli holes, and prenylated proteins. It’s fatal for yeast to be lacking of FPP.
