Quorum Quenching lactonase AiiA
AIIA lactonase is an enzyme. It plays an important role in disrupting pathogenic communication between Burkholderia pseudomallei cells, by detecting and cleaving their autoinducer, Acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs). By doing this, they control formation of pathogenic biofilm (a protective structure consisting of pathogen population) and pathogenicity. This enzyme helps to reduce quorum sensing, a mechanism through which pathogens coordinate gene expression based on cell density. It can be used to detect and cleave autoinducer AHLs. It can be used to reduce biofilm formation in natural contaminated water bodies, thus protecting the environment.
