tpSil3

Silaffin 3 is a polycationic protein and part of the organic matrix of Thalassiosira pseudonana's cell wall. It is involved in the biosilicification process. (Poulsen and Kröger 2004) [1]

Like tpSil1H, -1L, -2H and -2L, tpSil3 is rich in hydroxyamino acids and lysins, both of which become posttranslationally modified. tpSil3 is highly phosphorylated, glycosylated and sulfated. The silaffins appear to be involved in biosilica morphogenesis. (Poulsen and Kröger 2004) [1]

By fusing proteins to the C-terminus of tpSil3 (or a fragment thereof, see part BBa_K4750001) followed by expression in the diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana, proteins can be in vivo immobilized into the diatom cell wall. This underlying method is coined Live Diatom Silica Immobilization (LiDSI) and was developed by the Kröger lab. (Poulsen et al. 2007) [2]
