Lysis Cassette
This is a lysis cassette gene from the genome of lambda phage.
This sequence contains 3 genes, (1)the S gene, which encodes a holin that punctures the cell membrane,(2)the R gene, which encodes a lysozyme that degrades peptidoglycan in the periplasm, and(3)the Rz-Rz1 gene, which encodes a spanin that destroys the inner and outer membrane. Expression of these genes causes E. coli to lyse.
