CSP-1 Competence Signalling Peptide-1 in S.mutans
CSP is a 17 amino acid long small-peptide pheromone ribosomal synthesized and secreted by Streptococcus mutans and Strptococcus pneumoniae, which is a quorum sensing molecule that is commonly found in human dental plaque.
CSP can be detected by other S. mutans bacteria and leads them to release toxins that kill surrounding bacteria in order to help other S. mutans bacteria form a biofilm on the teeth surface. It regulates gene expression by interacting with ComD and ComE.
