Ranasmurfin Protein
We can only speculate at this stage about the biological function of ranasmurfin and the mechanism of its unusual posttranslational modifications, but its presence in the foam at relatively high levels suggests that it is involved, at least in part, in foam stabilization, adhesion, or other mechanical properties (Oke et al., 2008). When compared to the ranaspumins described above. P. leucomystax seems to rely more on viscosity than surfactant activity for initial stability of the nest foam. These frogs, common and widespread in south and east Asia, produce a sticky, syrupy fluid (McMahon et al., 2006).
