Small transcription activating RNA (STAR)
Small transcription activating RNAs (STARs) are short RNA molecules that are able to induce transcriptional activation. For this, a target RNA sequence is incorporated in the gene which one would like to induce activation. The target RNA sequence forms a hairpin which resembles a terminator and thus induces transcriptional termination. The STAR is able to basepair with the target RNA, disturbing the hairpin, and allowing transcription to continue for the full length of the gene.
