BI-1: BAX Inhibitor-1 CDS

A plant homologue of the BI-1 gene evolutionarily conserved in both animals and plants has been shown to suppress the cell death induced by Bax gene expression in yeast. Bax protein, which causes apoptosis by triggering cytochrome c release from the mitochondria. Here, we exploit this system for our biosafety device, expressing BI-1 under an inducible promoter, GAL1, and Bax under a constitutive promoter, ADH2. Thus, the apoptotic effects of Bax will be suppressed by the induced expression of BI-1, as long as there are galactose present to induce the GAL1 promoter.
