Design Notes

We chose to utilize this rfp-coding part in our project to differentiate between L. lactis and a green fluorescent microbe in a co-culture. This works because gfp and rfp have distinct absorption/emission spectra.

Source

This biobrick codes for mCherry, a engineered variant of the drFP583 protein (commonly known as DsRed) isolated from Discosoma sea anemones. mCherry was developed by Tsien et al in 2004 to serve as a smaller, more photostable variant of drFP583.
