DaIRIP4 - The Ice Inhibitor
This part includes the coding region from the Ice Recrystallisation Inhibition Protein 4 from Antarctic Hairgrass. This protein binds to growing ice crystals, preventing ice crystal growth and altering ice crystal morphology to prevent the growing crystals causing cellular damage. This part should reduce the damage done by cold stress.
The 2017 SECA NZ team characterised the effectiveness of DaIRIP4 with an electrolyte leakage assay.
DaIRIP4 transgenic plants showed improved frost resistance at 0oC when compared to controls.
Further testing showed some DaIRIP4 transgenic plants were resistant to damage at -20oC (A & B), while others performed no better than controls (C, D, & E).
An interesting result occurred at 25oC, where DaIRIP4 transgenic plants lost far fewer electrolytes than control plants.
