Classically, a genetic inverter receives as input the concentration of repressor A and, via gene expression, sends as output the concentration of repressor B.

One specific type of inverter is the "Quad Part Inverter", which refers to the fact that it is made up of four different basic parts--a promoter, RBS, coding region, and terminator.
