Description

Picture of a vesicle expressing GFP. Encapsulated within the vesicle is the Commercial E. coli S30 extract together with the DNA constuct BBa_T9002. The vesicle was seen under a phase-contrast microscope with white light (left picture) and with a filter (right picture).

Specifications of vesicle-encapsulation

Properties
Definitions
Encapsulation efficiency Measure of the amount of aqeuous contents being encapsulated as a percentage of the total amount of aqueous contents added to make the lipid-oil emulsion.
Vesicle stability Measure of time from vesicle-formation to the point when vesicle pops.
Membrane permeability Measure of the size of the largest particle that can pass through the non-specific protein pore inserted into the phospholipid bilayer.

Method of vesicle-encapsulation

Pictorial representation of method for vesicle-encapsulation based on Engineering Asymmetric Vesicles by Sophie Pautot et al (2003) and Toward an artificial cell based on gene expression in vesicles by Vincent Noireaux et al. (2005).
