Physiological effects of NHR-8
NHR-8 is required for gut function and may respond to the food signal.
The nhr-8 gene mutants have abnormally low resistance to the toxins colchicine and chloroquine. This resembles the regulation of protective metabolic enzymes by xenobiotic-sensing nuclear receptors.
NHR-8 may thus mediate a subset of the resistance traits promoted by PGP-3.
Possible applications of GAL4-NHR-8
By the addition of lipid ligands(unknown), the created system activates the expression of any kind of genes fused to UAS(upstream activation seqence)previously. Also can be used as a lipid sensor by activating reporter genes (e.g. Luciferase).
