ALOXE3 encodes for the enzyme eLOX3, which is very similar to 12-LOX in that it is coded by a gene located on the same chromosome and has the same function in the skin. However, the mechanism is slightly different. Instead of eLOX adding an oxygen molecule to the substrate to create fatty acid hydroperoxide, eLOX is involved in the hydroperoxide  becoming a signaling molecule [1].

ALOXE3

Usage and Biology

ALOXE3 encodes for the enzyme eLOX3, and is found on chromosome 17 in humans. It has its function in the skin, where eLOX3 is involved in the hydroperoxide becoming a signaling molecule [1].

The gene codes for one of the enzymes used for iGEM24_Linkoping substitution therapy for Ichthyosis.
