Usage and Biology
The fatty acid photodecarboxylase, found mainly in the chloroplasts of microalga Chlorella variabilis, catalyses the decarboxylation of free fatty acids into n-alkanes or n-alkenes in the presence of blue light. The reaction is initiated by electron abstraction from the fatty acid to a photo-excited cofactor flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD).
The direct conversion of free fatty acids (FFAs) into n-alkanes and n-alkenes is an essential feature of our project as it bypasses a series of more expensive and intensive steps in fuel (hydrocarbon) production.
